PRESS STATEMENT

30th August, 2022.

The Nigerian Feminist Forum condemns the killing of two innocent, elderly women in Cross Rivers State.

It is very pathetic, primitive, wicked and outrightly evil for youths to take laws into their hands and murder people’s mothers in cold blood.

Young men and women of Ebbaken community in Boje, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, have reportedly lynched two windows, Mrs Martina Osom and Mrs Rose Akom, for allegedly practicing witchcraft.

The sad incident took place yesterday, the 29th of August, 2022, in Ebok village, Boje, some irresponsible, ignorant youths murdered two old women in cold blood because they were said to be witches.

The incident, which occurred over the weekend, is currently causing chaos in the community as some residents condemned the act.

The woman who mentioned them as witches was spared because her son was around and the ones she accused were outrightly killed.

The deceased are Martina Enu Osong and Rose Oma Akom. May their Souls rest in Peace.

Should children of the murdered women choose to avenge their mothers, will there be calm in the community? Where were the chiefs of wisdom when these barbarians carried out this evil?

An eyewitness told Vanguard that the victims, who were devout members of the Catholic church, were returning from early morning prayers when the youths descended on them accusing the widows of initiating a member of the community into witchcraft.

He said the hoodlums tortured the victims to confess “but their passionate appeal to them that they were innocent fell on deaf ears.”

“They were both tied with strong ropes and beaten in the rain all through the day until they died,” he added.

The Chairman of Boki and all security agencies should please investigate this matter and arrest all that are involved in this evil.

Unfortunately, if prompt action is not taken, it will happen in other communities before December, 2022.

We cannot keep quiet on this as a similar incident happened two years ago when 30 women in Boki were burnt alive and now we have a recurrence in the same community.
